Chapter Eight

“ARE you ready to go?” Mike asked, walking through the door carrying a new bag to conceal the book. He didn’t know if Drew knew of the book or the secrets it held, but he didn’t want to risk it.

On his way back, he had managed to find a bench in a secluded part of town where he read and committed to memory the information he needed from the book. It had taken him a little longer than expected as the book was ancient and therefore not the easiest to read and understand. The sun had set by the time Mike had gotten back to the room, but he knew they should leave as soon as possible, if not to avoid another possible run-in with the guys following him, then to possibly improve Drew’s mood.

“Where did you go?” Drew asked weakly without looking at Mike. He was still sitting in the chair by the door he had been in when Mike had left, but the multiple empty tissue boxes and discarded tissues all over the table next to him indicated that he had moved at least once.

“Drew,” Mike said, dropping to his knees next to Drew, feeling an overwhelming rush of pain in his chest for the obvious heartache Drew was going though. “I had to find a book, but I found it and we can go. We’re really close to where we need to go to get to Jerome.”

“I tried summoning him,” Drew croaked out, gesturing to the supplies he had set up next to his bed.

“You aren’t powerful enough to summon him from so far away,” Mike said gently, placing a hand on Drew’s.

“I know,” Drew said as fresh tears began to spill from his eyes. “I even tried to use our soul bond to strengthen the spell, but it didn’t work.”

“You tried to amplify the spell?” Mike cried as a wave of terror washed over him. “Drew, we need to go. Like now! Using magic that powerful on top of what I used can only bring about the wrong kind of attention.”

“You used magic?” Drew asked, creasing his brow in anger.

“Yes, but I didn’t use my Naturals,” Mike said standing up and walking quickly to his bed to gather his belongings into his new bag. The fatigue from casting the spells in the magic shop was almost gone, but Mike had to work hard to not appear tired or weak for Drew’s sake. “I was in a magic shop, so I could very well have blended in with the magic that was already there, or at least it is a good cover if they did notice it, but you performing that spell here and amplifying it will not be so easy to dismiss.”

“Sure, blame me,” Drew said aggressively, raising his voice. “If you had just stayed and helped me, we could have summoned him!”

“I doubt even I could pull that off with the Bands still in place and from this distance,” Mike countered his accusation. “It isn’t doing any good to argue.
